"Many people who are constipated don’t think they are."

In most cases (depending on the reason why you have constipation), minor changes in diet and daily activities can help with constipation. However, for people suffering from chronic constipation, medication, and in some cases surgery, may be required. You should discuss your symptoms with your doctor to decide which treatment is right for your constipation.

Talk to your doctor about your treatment options
  • Gentle exercise — Walking can be an effective method for alleviating your constipation, particularly if you usually don’t get much exercise.
  • Increased fluid intake — Sometimes dehydration can cause constipation. Make sure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day and avoiding caffeinated drinks.
  • Increased fiber intake — Most Americans don’t eat enough fiber. Including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet can help your body properly digest food.
  • Synthetic fiber supplement — If you find it difficult to eat sufficient fiber-filled foods, supplements may be a good alternative. They are available at your local drug store and do not require a prescription.
  • Non-stimulant and stimulant laxatives — Also available over-the-counter, ask your pharmacist’s advice on which brand of laxative is right for you. Some can have unfavorable side-effects like cramping and diarrhea. Remember, overuse of laxatives can actually increase constipation.
  • Prescription medications — If lifestyle changes and over-the-counter treatments don’t work for you, talk to your doctor about your prescription medication options. From powders to pills, there is a wide range of prescription options.
  • Biofeedback Therapy— People suffering from ODS can sometimes use biofeedback to retrain the muscles that control the release of bowel movements. Biofeedback uses sensors and a computer to monitor anal muscle activity and show patients when they are using the correct anal muscles.
  • Surgery — For some people, surgery is the only way to correct the defects which are causing their constipation. Now, there are minimally invasive surgical techniques that can alleviate some causes of chronic constipation.
